Indian stock markets to close on Independence Day, affecting multiple segments

Indian stock exchanges to remain inactive on Independence day

Independent trading activities on both the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and National Stock Exchange (NSE) will be inactive on Independence Day, the 15th of August, as reported on the BSE website. The temporary halt encompasses the Equity Segment, Equity Derivative Segment, and SLB Segment. Usually, Equity segment trading operates on all days that are not classified as weekends or predetermined holidays by the exchange.

This coming August, the stock markets will cease activity for a total of eight days, due to a combination of weekends and the official holiday for Independence Day. In the 2023 calendar year, a total of eight market holidays preceded Independence Day:, Republic Day (January 26), Holi (March 7), Ram Navami (March 30), Mahavir Jayanti (April 4), Good Friday (April 7), Ambedkar Jayanti (April 14), Maharashtra Day (May 1), and Bakri Id (June 28).

The remaining market closure days for this year include Ganesh Chaturthi (September 19), Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti (October 2), Dussehra (October 24), Diwali Balipratipada (November 14), Guru Nanak Jayanti (November 27) and Christmas (December 25).

On the final trading day of last week, a decrease was observed in the Sensex index as points fell by 365.53, settling at 65,322.65. Similarly, the NSE Nifty also observed a drop of 114.80 points, concluding at 19,428.30.

Several stocks from the Sensex pack experienced losses, with notable laggard performances from IndusInd Bank, NTPC, Asian Paints, Hindustan Unilever, JSW Steel, Tech Mahindra, Bajaj Finance, Infosys, Wipro, ICICI Bank, Bajaj Finserv, HDFC Bank, and Tata Motors.
